Protecting People • Preserving Equipment • Caring for the Environment
At Square Knot Ltd, we take biosecurity seriously. Whether you’re hiring our specialist Water Rescue & Water Access or joining one of our training courses, we make sure every piece of kit is clean, safe, and environmentally responsible.
Why Biosecurity Matters
Water rescue gear is used in a wide variety of environments — from clean training pools to floodwaters and open rivers. Without proper cleaning, equipment can spread harmful microorganisms, aquatic diseases, or chemical residues between locations.
Our Biosecurity & Cross-Contamination Policy ensures that:
- All equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before and after use.
- Cross-contamination between users, sites, and courses is prevented.
- Cleaning methods are safe for the user, equipment, and environment.
Our Commitment
We inspect, clean, and disinfect every item before it’s issued and again when it’s returned.
That includes:
- Dry suits and buoyancy aids
- Helmets and throw bags
- Ropes, boards, inflatables, and rescue tools
If any equipment has been used in floodwater or contaminated environments, it is isolated and decontaminated before reuse.
Our Decontamination Process
We use BioGuard Decontamination — a trusted cleaning system approved for professional water rescue applications.
Why BioGuard?
✅ Proven safe on equipment: Independent testing by WRS International confirmed that BioGuard does not damage or degrade rescue materials, even with repeated use.
✅ Environmentally kind: BioGuard is alcohol-free, pH-neutral, and biodegradable. It breaks down into harmless salts and water, helping to protect rivers and ecosystems.
✅ Effective disinfection: It removes dirt, organic matter, and harmful microorganisms, reducing infection and contamination risks.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Routine
- Rinse – Remove mud and debris using clean, fresh water.
- Clean – Apply BioGuard solution to all surfaces, paying special attention to contact areas (e.g. straps, handles, interior surfaces).
- Dwell time – Allow the solution to work for the manufacturer’s recommended contact period.
- Rinse again (if required) – Rinse away any residue using clean water.
- Dry – Hang or air-dry completely in a clean, ventilated space.
- Inspect & record – Every cleaned item is checked, logged, and stored ready for issue.
Responsibilities
- Our Team: Responsible for inspection, cleaning, and record-keeping.
- Hire Clients: Must return kit clean and report any contamination or damage.
- Course Participants: Follow instructor guidance and avoid sharing personal kit when possible.
Protecting the Environment
Our choice of BioGuard reflects our commitment to sustainability.

- Reduce the release of harsh chemicals into waterways.
- Protect both aquatic and terrestrial environments.
- Extend the lifespan of our specialist rescue gear.
Continuous Improvement
We regularly review and audit our cleaning and decontamination process to meet the latest best-practice standards and equipment manufacturer guidance. Any changes to products or legislation will be reflected in updated procedures.
