Water Rescue, Trauma and Casualty Care

Advanced Rescue & Pre-Hospital Response Package
Exclusive to Square Knot we’ve developed a comprehensive blended course combining Rescue, Trauma & Casualty Care (RTACC), RYA-Accredited First Aid, and specialist Water Rescue Equipment training

What is this combined course?

This advanced training package merges three core elements to deliver a high-level, multi-domain capability:

Water Rescue Equipment Training: Safe use, maintenance, and deployment of water rescue tools and PPE

RTACC: High-intensity trauma and casualty care in realistic scenarios

RYA First Aid: Broad, accredited first aid certification (for on- and off-water contexts)

This combination is designed for responders who need to operate in mixed environments—land, water margins, flood zones—and want to be fully prepared for both medical/trauma response and water-based rescue situations.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for people who:

  • Are already working in (or will be deployed to) roles where both medical trauma and water risk are likely.
  • Watersport instructors looking to expand beyond one day first aid.
  • Typically: search & rescue teams, flood response units, maritime operations staff, utilities, environmental & civil protection agencies.

What you’ll learn

This course blends theory and practical modules from all three components; below is an overview of what’s included.

Theory & Classroom ModulesPractical Skills / Scenario Work
• Scene safety, trauma assessment & prioritisation (RTACC)• Handling real-life trauma & casualty simulations (bleeding, fractures, shock)
• Anatomy & physiology, mechanisms of injury• Use of airway adjuncts, immobilisation techniques
• First aid principles per RYA standards (CPR, basic life support, etc.)• First aid in wet / cold / moving water conditions
• Use & inspection of water rescue PPE & equipment (throw bags, rescue lines, etc.)• Deployment of water rescue equipment from shore / boat / raft
• Hydrology, risk in flood / water hazards, environmental exposure• Self-rescue; recovering from immersion; safe water entry / exit
• Incident command, communications, mass casualty triage• Combined scenarios: medical + water rescue

Learning Outcomes

After completing the package, delegates will be able to:

  • Confidently assess and manage serious trauma in both dry and wet environments.
  • Provide RYA-standard first aid including CPR, medical emergencies, and basic life support.
  • Use, maintain, and deploy water rescue equipment safely and effectively.
  • Move safely in, on, or near water; understand hazards of water exposure, cold shock, unstable footing, etc.
  • Execute self-rescue and support rescue efforts from shore or shallow water without endangering themselves.
  • Work as part of a coordinated response team, including roles in incident management, triage, and casualty evacuation.

Course Details

  • Duration: Usually 3 days, mixing classroom, skills workshops, & scenario-based assessments.
  • Prerequisites: Previous first aid qualification or experience good physical fitness; ability to work in wet environments.
  • Certification:
QNUK Level 3 Rescue Trauma And Casualty Care (3 year validity)
RYA First Aid – MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for some commercial work afloat. (3 year validity)
Royal Life Saving Society Water Rescue Equipment competence.
  • Assessment: Theory examinations, skills demonstrations, plus full scenario-based assessment combining medical + water rescue tasks.

Why take this course?

In real emergencies, the boundary between water incidents and trauma is often blurred. Whether it’s flood response, riverbank accidents, boating incidents, or remote operations, responders can find themselves needing to perform first aid and use water rescue tools.

This combined package ensures you are not only legally and operationally certified, but also confident in handling complex, high risk, mixed environment emergencies. It saves time and cost compared to taking each course separately, and ensures consistent, integrated skills.
